Presentation is Everything

I love trying new projects...coming up with ideas, putting them together, making it work. When I'm able to tap into my creative side it makes the line between work and play somewhat blurred. It is work but it's also somewhat therapeutic to the everyday trials and tribulations of being a business owner and mother and just life in general. So where am I going with this? Aah yes, I remember now.

Well when I'm assisting clients with their design elements for their event, it's very different than those that I basically have free reign over what I do. I tend to go all out in those situations, I just can't help it! That is where I'm at with a particular event. I'm helping my mom plan the annual company cookout for my father's business. Last year we did a luau and it was great, a lot of people got into it and wore their Hawaiian shirts, everyone had a great time. This year I mentioned a bunch of different theme ideas and I'm happy with the choice she made. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of one of my dad's businesses, the one that started it all.

My dad is a huge inspiration to me since he followed his dream and now I'm following mine, and he's also one of my biggest supporters. So since this is a milestone year I wanted to do something different, something that is really a celebration of what the business has become and to share it with the employees who have had a part in making it happen. I also want it to be a reflection of how much I admire my father for all that he's done. Since he is always impressed when I show him a random creation of mine, I know what I have planned will probably take the cake.

I knew we would use the company colors, which happen to be red and black, throughout whatever we do. I also mentioned to mom that I'd like to find pictures of the early years to work them into it as well. Other than that I hadn't put much thought into it, that is until one night last week. A lot of my creative ideas come to me at the most random times. This time it was just relaxing on the couch watching TV.

I don't want to elaborate on my plans just yet, I'd rather wait until it's actually done and I have pictures to share. So please, forgive the vagueness. What I will tell you is this. I am going to need flowers and lots of them so I've been looking into wholesalers. In addition to that I need a trip to Barnes and Noble to sit with a cup of coffee and several books (on fruit and vegetable garnishing/sculpting) to see if by chance anyone else has had (one of) the ideas that I've got in my head and if it was documented somehow. I have the vision for it, I just need to think more about the logistics, what foods will work best, even what tools are best! This is a new endeavor for me so I'm researching different techniques and anything I can get my hands on to pull it together.

Presentation is key.
